Checking the cows......with help

Hanging out in the pasture this evening, I wanted to check on the cows to see how many little ones have hit the ground, (have been born).
Of course they are spread out... some on the horizon to the left, some a bit closer...and some behind me.

I wait at the windmill for them to waddle in. The horses make it here first, looking for treats and checking to see if I have a bridle in my hand.

this one looks sooooo uncomfortable... ready to "hatch" any day now. :)

Thinking I'm just sitting on the tailgate of the pickup with nothing to do... she's pretty sure I should be petting her. :)

I can't resist her... She's so soft and warm. She nickers at me when I stroke her cheek and talk to her. :)

a good nostril shot... (not mine!)

By the time the cattle made it in, the sun had set and it was too dark to take pics..
I'll have to try again first thing in the morning. :)

Baby cows are so cute, too bad they grow up to be ugly ol cows... but I will still eat them. Hope it is not as hot up there as it is down here in Houston... have a great weekend.

Oh darn, no white-face baby shots. I just knew this was the one.
That momma looks so uncomfortable!

That's a pretty fine looking set of horses Jeanie. Very healthy looking. I kinda miss being around them at times.

I'm not much of a horse person, but your posts always have a way of making me want to run away to be a cowgirl. So how long do you keep the calves around before they're sent off to market?

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing.

Sitting on the tailgate of the pick-up is cheating...:) Out here we "calve" during the late fall, early winter. Think snow, rain and crappy weather, being cold, wet and on horseback in the hills....Good Luck with NO losses..
btw.....raining here AGAIN!!!!! It's going to be a good "feed year" and a bad fire season...

Thanks Mark! I like to keep the horses and cows "shiny".
I bet you DO miss being around the nice ones anyway. Maybe not the bucking kind. :)
I know it sounds silly but I love the smell of a horse. lol
You need to get one Mark! :)

Haha Kirby, you might like being a cowgirl!
I sell the calves in the fall. They go to winter wheat pastures.

Thank you Toyin! Thanks for stopping by!

lol Rick, I was cheatin' making them come to the windmill. :)
I wish I could have some of your rain!! It's so dry here... the grass is crispy.
Lost my first calf about 45 minutes ago. The young heifer had trouble and I had to "pull" it.
Not pleasant but I think the Mom is going to be ok.

Don't you miss doing this stuff? ;)

Yep, I do miss the "ranch life" but I am old and "busted up" and I am not much help, but I still miss the smell of good horseflesh and wet leather. :) I always hated losing calves, but that is part of it. Hope the heifer will be OK...

Thanks Rick, she is up and looking good now. I hate that part too...thankfully I've not lost many.
I love the smell of horseflesh and wet leather too. :)
I'm sure you must miss part of the lifestyle... it seems to stay in your blood.
Hope you have a great weekend!!

Do you tag & Tatoo your calves or nust toast them with a branding iron? We used to tag & tatoo all of ours on the day they were born, if you could find them, and then in the fall we would cut nuts and cull out the feed lot steers and the ones we were going to sell.

You know I have pulled more calves then I could count over 21 years of cattle farming. I got pretty good at it. Also we used to break all the hefers we kept so that we could doctor them up easily.

BTW I hate fixin barbed wire at 3 am in the ice and rain after some drunk runs through the fence.

Tag Jim, it's a lot easer. Now I know who to call next time there's work to do. :)

I haven't had the drunk driver problem.. thankfully! There aren't that many vehicles on my road.

J

Every 4th of July and new years eve, with out fail some one would run through the fence some time around 2 to 4 am.

Lots of times they would drive off before the cops showed up.

Love pics of good looking animals. But I think that one of the female cow is a little distorted....sideways. HaHa!! Man she's big.

cowgirl said...

I don't envy you Jim....that would be a pain in the neck. It's no fun fixing fence in the daylight!
Hope you have a great week!

cowgirl said...

haha... She is huge Rueben, and she hasn't had the calf yet.
Hope you had a great weekend! Thanks!! :)
