Tomato Plants

My tomato plants are doing great, I've got them blocked from the wind using sheets of tin from my old barn...

There are several small tomatoes on the vines....

Also found a nice, big spider egg sack......

It looks like a black widow sack, but I haven't found the mom yet....
This is the second black widow nest I've found this week. The first one was in my horse barn. I'm sure there are plenty more around here. It's probably a good time for me to go on a spider egg sack hunt so I can catch them before they hatch! :)

Beautiful tomatoes. When I planted my tomatoes I got them mixed up and I'm just now able to discern which are "better boys" and which are "romas." Do you have to protect from the wind because of the flat land? I guess the hills here do that for us - I've never thought of that.
p.s. I'm rooting for a kill the spiders weekend~!!!

Hey, Thanks Gene!
I'm hoping for lots of tomatoes....you can never have too many tomatoes. lol
I'm always watching for rattlesnakes hiding in my garden plants, looks like I need to keep an eye on for the momma spider too.

Hope your tobacco planting is going well.

Thank you Mrs JP!
Sounds like you are going to have lots of fresh tomatoes too!!

The wind can be pretty harsh here. I'm acually in a small valley or low spot but the wind is amazing at times. The tin I use to protect my plants came from my old barn that was destroyed by wind. lol
I think I will have a "destroy the spiders" weekend soon! :)

Thanks!

lol Chez... I guess I am a pretty dedicated gardener. Those homegrown tomatoes are worth putting up with a few bugs and snakes. :)
You should see how jumpy I get in the fall when the wind rattles the leaves on the okra plants. lol

Thank you OTT!
If I catch and smoke a rattler, I'll be sure to post pics about it here. lol
I've fried them before but have not tried them smoked... might be worth a try? :)

Hope you have a great day too!

I'm worried about our tomato plants. We got several varieties this year, but #(@$ some of them are growing too tall! One is 5' and is just starting to bear fruit. We have it staked but not sure it's going to be able to stand up when the tomatoes get big.

So dumb question, how do you know it's a black widow sac? I clear them in the garage all the time, but never know what kind of spider momma was.

Pretty nice looking tomatoes Jeanie. Thats all I planted this year, and that is more than I usually plant. I'd post mine, but I think it could be kinda embarrassing. lol. Looks like we both found some eggs of some sort. My eggs are alot nicer than yours though. lol.

Hey Chris,
Sounds like you planted some indeterminate tomato plants.. that variety will make fairly long vines. If you look for a determinate variety of tomato, the vines stop growing at about 4'.
Bet your maters are going to be tasty though!!
The web the spider left makes me think it was a black widow. They build some awesome looking nests. I'll snap a picture of the next one I find. :)

Hi Mark, thanks!
I hope your tomatoes do well for you. I bet the plants look great. If they produce a bunch, I'll send ya my salsa recipe. :)

You want to trade eggs with me? I liked the ones you found a lot better than mine! lol
Hope you are having a great weekend. :)
