My shrimp herd was delivered one late night in May, I wanted to snap a couple of pictures before releasing them into the pond...
I tried to get a close up of the little fellows but they didn't come out clear...
Here are a few in a cup.
They didn't show up well in the cup, so I grabbed a paper plate....
Then I got to thinking, that was kind of cruel.... hope I didn't traumatize the little buggers!
My future olive smoked shrimp, bacon wrapped shrimp, shrimp scampi, DINGLE shrimp, gumbo shrimp, ... I could go on and on. :)

I think they're gonna be more traumatized when they go in the cooker! When will they be big enough for harvesting?
grothe
Oh,,,that reminded me of Forrest Gump. When he was listening to his friend tell about his shrimping business.
Would need to eat an awful lot of those little guys for a meal.lol
How long before they bulk up for the smoke? Hey heard some baseball players have some extra steroids looking to get rid of,just think, shrimp, the size of your hand. lol
OTT
If I have a pond, that's what I would do too. I love shrimp!
Actually, I think the transformation from shrimp "herd" to olive smoked shrimp, bacon wrapped shrimp, etc is probably more traumatic than the plate. But oh how tasty they are!
Gene, I think you're probably right! lol
They will be ready to harvest in the fall. The end of September to the middle of October.
cowgirl ... you never cease to amaze me.
lol Mrs JP, I was thinking the same thing!
lol OTT, Mine are "free range" shrimp... no steroids for these babies. lol
I start checking them in September. Keep the bigger ones and throw the smaller ones back in to grow a bit longer.
Thanks YD! I love shrimp too. :)
Anonymous, I agree, it's kind of difficult putting down any of my livestock, but somehow the shrimp are the easiest to throw into a pot.
(sounds mean, I know!)
They are just too danged tasty. :)
Chez, what a kind thing to say... Thank you!! :)

Nice Forrest!
The Dude Abides
I could be wrong, but, I always thought of it kinda hard to traumatize a shrimp Jeanie. All those shrimp dishes you mentioned are getting my taste buds all worked up.
lol Hey Jay, I can run too!
Mark, I sure hope I didn't traumatize them. :)
I'm starting to think shrimp on a stick over a fire sounds just fine too. lol
It makes me all warm and fuzzy to have a dish named after me and especially that its posted on your blog!!
DINGLE
Hey DINGLE...Thanks! And a big Thanks for sharing your shrimp recipe. It's so tasty! :)
I was just looking for the blog post about it... I added your name to the title so it will be easier to find next time!
Hope all is well with you.
hello, my name is Noah. im intrested in raising shrimp, but i dont think i know enough about it. Where do you get your shrimp? what is the temperature of your water? could i use carpet as a substrate? what do you feed them? what do you put in the crawfish traps to catch them?
Hi Noah! Nice to meet you.
There is a lot of great information at the Mississippi state extension site..
http://msucares.com/aquaculture/prawns/index.html
They have a list of suppliers too that might be close to you.
The water needs to be above 65 degrees and under 95. I feed a sinking catfish feed but they do great on the bugs in the pond.
I save chicken parts in baggies and freeze them...then use that for bait.
Hope this helps Noah! There is more information on my blog at the bottom of my "favorites" list under the smokehouse picture.
Good luck to you!
