Keepin' Warm

Got hit kind of hard with this last snow storm. I have no idea how much snow we received. The wind was so strong, some spots had barely two inches while other places had 4' drifts.

Checking on the cattle has been the hardest part but I'm glad the cows were bred for a later calving date. No little ones to worry about!

I started to make a pot of venison stew.... seasoned some cubed venison with salt and pepper, dredged in flour and gave it a quick browning.

Added the meat to a pot of cubed potatoes, onions, barley, beef stock and seasonings.  I threw in what ever sounded good. :)   Garlic, thyme, basil...

I'm not a fan of cooked carrots so I left those out and added corn instead. Then let the pot simmer on low all day until the venison was fall apart tender.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as stew but it turned out to be pretty tasty and it warmed me up..... just what I was aiming for. :)

With this last snow, I foresee green pastures and maybe even a good morel mushroom crop this spring! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Hope everyone stayed safe and warm!

Glad you got some snow Jeanie. I know you need some water. Maybe you can have a campfire this summer...

Green pastures and morels, sure, but I'd be afraid of finding a frozen Jack Nicholson come springtime.

When you go 'shrooming please take plenty of pictures. I think it would be very interesting to see what kind of terrain/environment and vegetation you are finding them in western(?) Oklahoma. Thanks.

oh my, you did get hit. Very smart timing your calving for late spring.
That stew looks delish.

I take the snow storm as being a good thing Jeanie. Looks somewhat Canada-ish down your way. The bambi stew is looking pretty good too.

Winter has come late to these parts too. The stew looks great. I have been enjoying venison all winter long and stew is one of my favorites along with venison stroganoff, fajitas, chili and your famous bierocks. My family loves those. Thanks again for that awesome recipe. Whenever I can't find my recipe card I just come here and search for it!

WOW! I see ya got some of the moisture I sent your way but I did'nt realize I had the "mojo" cranked up high enough to bury you in snow....;)
Glad the calves are late, no fun worrying about the babys in bad weather.
Showers here for the next couple of days, we need it. The grass is not up and I'm having to feed he 'horns, I hope the hay lasts....
That stew looks mighty inviting. Great "cold weather comfort food".
Stay warm 'n dry
