There was an interesting article Sunday in the Wichita Eagle about a managed 1 acre plot of sunflowers done specifically to attract doves.
Take a look and see if it is something that would be of interest:
Mmm Mmm Jeanie you always make my mouth water. No dove hunting for me this year just had back surgery last Wed. so for now I'll have to live vicariously through you. Keep up the good work
Dang it Roger, I'm sure sorry to hear that. Hope the surgery went well and hope your recovery time is short. I will cook some of these dove in your honor. :) Thanks!
Nice mess of birds. I used to love dove hunting when I lived in TX. I could sure go through a box of shells in a hurry. Hunt the fields early then hunt near water later in the day. Smothered doves breasts are the awesome.
Mmmm...That sounds really good Rawtalent! I haven't made smothered dove breasts for a long time. I seem to be in a smoke/bbq rut. lol Thanks so much for the idea and thanks for stopping by! :)
I'm jealous. Dang legislators won't pass the bill on dove hunting so we just watch as they fly around by the millions teasing us. We've been hitting the geese pretty hard and have 10 down so far. The shells are wicked expensive though. Especially if you shoot like me. I average about 40% success rate. Friend of mine used to hunt doves in TX and said they would soak in milk, stuff w/ jalapeno and mesquite grill them perhaps with bacon wrapped around them can't remember details. Good Shooting Cowgirl
Shoot Bushman, that's too bad about the dove. Congratulations on the geese though...that's great!! I've made the jalapeno bacon wrapped dove and love them too! Thanks Bushman! :)
Looks like you had a good day murdering, I mean harvesting, :-) birds. Every once in a while our son would provide a few breasts for the grill and I thought they were real tasty, but haven't had any in years. If I were a good shot, I could set here in the driveway and bag my limit, but I'd probably just shoot up a box of shells and scare a bunch of them.
:) Larry, they are tasty! I like to sit in my backyard on a lawn chair with the music playing in my shop...then in the evenings I head to the windmill pond. It's a nice feeling to be able to bag a few meals without much effort. Thanks Larry!
Anonymous, I've heard that dove isn't hunted in some northern places... It's too bad, they are so tasty. I'm sure you make up for it with other wild game that I can't get down here. :) Thanks Anonymous!
nice looking take, i think there's more birds on that tailgate than i saw flying when i went. hope we get to see your amazing way to cook them birds that make them so tasty!

Ron, thanks for the link! That's pretty interesting!
Wow, you got a pretty good number there. Do you just freeze them for winter?
Thanks Mrs JP! I just keep the breasts, soak them in salt water overnight then I bag them (and cover with water) then freeze.
They are tasty. :)

Jeanie, it looks like you're as good a shot as you are a cook. Smothered is good, but so grilled with bacon!
Yum
Thank you Capt. Ron! I do love them grilled too... :)
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

We have ruffed and spruce grouse around our place. Never had dove but suppose it's delicious. Grouse gets gamey and sprucey.

Faith I've not tried grouse. The dove are tasty... small but worth the effort. :)
Dove is my favorite wildgame bird - just love 'em stuffed with jalapenos, cheese and wrapped in bacon and smoked!
I love your blog --- great recipes!
Lucky you! Here in Iowa I've only had dove when it was imported by friends hunting in Texas. In Iowa it is not considered a game bird.
Thanks Vickie! I appreciate you stopping by!
Aren't dove great.. kind of small like shrimp but sooooo tasty. :)

That's a lot of pluckin' to do.

Thank you Pid! I can't get Rawtalent's smothered dove out of my mind... think I'm going to have to make that first. :)
