Might be a redneck campfire :)

Expecting the burn ban to be in effect during the last camping trip, friends came prepared.
Gas and charcoal were allowed at the time but no wood fires...
So.....

One friend's husband came up with this "campfire". It's a gas fireplace insert, cut down and modified a bit to fit their tractor rim fire ring.

The pipes are used in place of fake logs to disperse the flames....

It worked great! :)

The burn ban was lifted and we were able to burn wood, but it was nice to know we were going to have a campfire one way or another. :)

What a great idea! Now Im going to have to build me one! One question Jeanie, does your tractor rim have the center in it still, or have you removed it? (i see this one does not have the center)And hopefully soon I will get my blog going thanks!

Chris it worked great! :)
This is my friend's tractor rim but both this one and mine do not have a center. Both also have about a 3" square cut out of the bottom on one side for better air flow when burning wood. You can see the hole in this one where the propane connection fits.

Looking forward to your blog Chris.. Thanks!

Why don't you head up to E. Tennessee for a week and set up camp down beside my dock. You can camp, boat, fish, hunt, relax and of course cook. I have the fire ring but bring your grate. You can have the place to yourself and any friends you bring, except at meal time - I'll provide the food and you just cook it. Running water at the dock and toilets at the house - when can we expect you?
