One of the joys of country life.... the burn pit.
Most farms and ranches do not have the benefit of trash pick up or hauling trash to a dump. Small things are usually burnt in a 55 gallon drum... larger things, wood scraps etc. are thrown into a deep pit.
The pit is located far away from any out buildings or anything important. The best time to burn your pit is when the ground is either blanketed with snow or after a nice rain.
The conditions were perfect last weekend... the wind came out of the south, the ground had several inches of fresh snow...
....I had a can of diesel and a match. :)
So.... what do you do while keeping an eye on the burn pit?
Climb into your heated pickup, crank the music up loud ........then sit back and watch the clouds and sunset.
lol I enjoyed the evening! :)

No wonder you like to cook outdoors so much. You are a pyromaniac!
Beautiful country, beautiful sunset just beautiful.
Yup Cowgirl looks about the same as mine! lol We have slightly bigger fires! hehehehe
I was going to make a crack about cooking something over it, but I will pass. Ha!
you can't beat fun with fire!
so no diesel fume dogs on a stick?
Jeanie there ya go again giving away the top secret info on how we spend our leisure time again. Great pics of the sky though, love it. Weatherman said ya all had another decent snow, pic's show that. More coming your way in the near future they say, us to. Well, its winter still. I don't see any twisters, droughts or skeeters anytime soon unfortunately. Its just haul bales of hay, stay warm and dry, check the water troughs, stay warm and dry, prowl for coyotes, stay warm and dry.
Up here we usually invite a few people over(they can bring their own burnables if they want),put the beer in the snow bank, break out the brats and chips and have a burn party! No hiding in a warm truck, thats what the fire is for....

I grew up on a farm...I know of what you speak lol...your photos are just amazing!
Was the moon not out that night??? I fully expected that to be the last picture.
Burn pits are a staple. So much fun and when my grandbabes are here the marshmallows come out (ok, even when they're not here and I think of it I toast a few)
Have a great weekend cowgirl.
lol Jerry, the pigs were getting nervous!
Thanks! :)
Marc, lol I think I like the smell of smoke. How have you been, I hope all is well. :)
Thanks!
lol Ash! You know how much fun burn pits are. :) I wasn't sure how far out into the country you lived. :) Hope you have a great weekend.
Marty! Isn't it odd for me to have a big fire going and no food involved. lol Thanks!
Rocco...that would be an improvement on some of the store bought dogs I've tried. lol
Thanks! :)
Hahaha... David, you've got it exactly right. lol
Haul round bales, break ice in troughs, keep coyotes at bay, get warm and repeat. :)
Throw in a snow angel, snow ice cream and snow balls every once in a while and there's my winter.
Hope you are keeping warm.
Thanks!
lol Dave, your burn pit sounds like fun! :)
I did have beer in the snow bank by the pickup, but I also had green toxic looking smoke coming from the pit with explosions every so often to keep me alert. At one time I though I might need to back up my pickup to keep safe.
It was almost like a fireworks show. lol
Thanks Dave! :)
Thank you Georgia! Isn't country life fun... there are so many little things we enjoy that you can only find living in the middle of nowhere. :)
Thanks for stopping by!
hahaha.... No moon that night Mrs JP. It was too cloudy. :)
Toassted marshmallows sound great... maybe I could light a fire in my tractor rim tonight.
Thanks Mrs JP! :)
green smoke, explosions!? what are you burning!? just kidding, i haven't burned one like that in a while, only brush for me now. working for a state funded organization means i have to be legit, they even inspect my burn site. they don't know i still use a little tire filled with diesel as a starter, shhhh
pid
It would only have been more fun if you had lined up combustible containers on the edge and then had fun taking target practice, trying to knock them into the fire pit.
Oops....is my red neck showing?
haha.. pid, diesel works great doesn't it. :) I'm still wondering what caused the explosions... no telling what was in the pit. I think plastic might have made the green smoke.
Hope you have fun with your brush burns. :)
Dang it Chris, I wish I would have thought of that. Maybe next time. :)
Thanks!!
ha, ya diesel definitely the way to go. i have two bad experience with gas. short story 1. unexpected light while sloshing, 2. me young, uncle using gas can to spread fire on whole brush pile, can catches, he tosses can and spray hits me. i had a roll a lot in the snow to get it out. he was very apologetic!

I'm not that old (really, I'm not) but when I was a kid growing up in the So Cal suburbs, we had an incinerator in the back yard. Everyone did.
Dang pid! That was a close call on both counts! Hope you weren't hurt bad. That's pretty scary!
Kirby, that's interesting! I hadn't heard about those. Bet they were really handy to have.
Thanks Kirby!
